How Can You Finally Lose Weight?

By Anne Barton The theory behind weight loss is simple: eat less and exercise more. Easier said than done. Eating less involves either decreasing the amount of food one eats and/or eating food with less calories. The goal is to decrease ones caloric intake. The act of "eating less" is difficult because it involves changing ones habit of eating. Our diet is based on what our parents taught us to eat. If one has been eating a certain diet for 30 years, it is going to be difficult to change this habit. When we eat has been ingrained in us from our childhood. Many of us have been taught to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and, although there is nothing wrong with the mealtimes, this schedule encourages 3 large portions per day as opposed to eating small frequent snacks throughout the day. Eating small portions during the day helps boost metabolism, and thus, weight loss. Why we eat has also been deeply ingrained in us. Food provides the nutrition we need for our bodies to function but it also gives us emotional comfort and something to do when we socialize with family and friends. Food is also a means for people to earn money as well restaurants, chocolate shops, grocery stores etc are all businesses that need food to be successful. Since food is a necessity and a comfort, it is difficult to determine when our body actually needs food as opposed to when it wants food. Eating less may mean depriving ones body of this need and desire and this concept is very hard to unlearn. One should focus on the fact that by only giving the body what it needs (food for nutrition), he/she is achieving the goal of weight loss and becoming healthier in the process. It takes time to "unlearn" ones unhealthy eating habits the body needs to adjust to receiving fewer calories and the mind must re-learn the true reason for food. Exercise is the way the body burns more calories to lose weight. Aerobic exercise is the most efficient way to lose weight because calories are being used from fat to provide the energy for these activities. At least 60 minutes of exercise per day is recommended to lose weight. The challenge in exercising is finding the determination to exercise regularly. For many people, its hard to start exercising because they view is as "something else to do" or "work." Once they get started on a walking program, for example, they realize they feel better, enjoy this break in their day, and think "this is fun." In the meantime, their body is losing fat, gaining muscle, improving physical endurance and losing weight. By making these lifestyle changes, eating less and exercising more, not only is weight loss achieved, but also a healthier state of well-being.
